Follow Your Heart

“If I am not my true self:

until I am angel for another,

since life is a circular thing

that ends where it begins,

like the golden-white halos

that crown the heads

of spiritually high, fine-minded, holy ones,

whose eyelids move up and down

with the grace of a gazelle

every time they blink;

due to their vast savannas of fellow feelings,”

I said to God,

“then I need to know what love truly is,

because I don’t want to be afraid

of the dark riddle of death, anymore.”

And God said,

“Then be wise to your soul,

puzzle out your mind,

and follow your heart,

because she knows

how to string herself along

with my way of thinking.”

Nahshon Cook's poetry has appeared in two Cleo Parker Robinson Dance productions and at peace and interfaith conferences in Colorado which have included Mysticism and Social Change, A Celebration of Religious Freedom, and Race, Gender and Class in the Building of the Beloved Community,  Peace out Loud... for a change!, and the 2009 Denver Martin Luther King Day parade and march. He has had poems published in Divine Revolution Magazine and Grafitti-Kolkata. His first collection of poetry A New Beginning will be published in January 2010 by "please” press.
