Morning:

Two women about my age are behind the counter at Starbucks. They do not see me yet.

"I don't know what I am gonna do," the one closest to me says.

"You are gonna make yourself sick." the other says.

The first one notices me...

"Tall mocha no whip, sweetie?" she asks. She is not her usual self.

"Its either a man," I say, holding up my right thumb beginning the count, "money," I add, holding up my  first finger, "or children." middle finger added for a three-count.

"Its not a man!" she emphasizes. "I wish...its children and money,,," The tears form at the edges of her eyes and she tells me about her no-good daughter-in-law who neglects the grandkids, is never home, never cooks. It is a scenario perfect for Dr. Phil. "I just love my grandkids soooo much but they don't eat unless I feed them."

I don't have any answers for her. I reach across the counter and take her hand and squeeze.

Evening:
I am riding my bike on the boardwalk. In the distance I see two young men on beach cruisers pedaling towards me. Well ahead of me is a man on foot going the same direction I am and they are swiftly approaching him.

"High five, dude!" the young man closest to the pedestrian shouts toward him as he holds up his hand. The pedestrian holds his hand up to the stranger and they high-five.

"YOU!" the young man points at me as our distance closes, "High five, man!"

I hold up my hand as we pedal toward each other.

"Alright!" he shouts as our hands meet perfectly. "Whoo-hoo!"

Behind me I hear..."Hey! High five!" as he goes on to the next, and the next.
